Charleston

Charleston is a city rich in history, tradition and Southern charm, attracting nearly 4 million visitors a year. Charleston dining and the enormous selection of outstanding restaurants are a main attraction in themselves. Charleston is known as The Holy City due to the prominence of churches on the low-rise cityscape. You could spend the day (or days) browsing the Market and ambling through the ante-bellum districts and neighborhoods appreciating the beautiful architecture and spectacular gardens and ironwork. The horse and buggy tour is a must to appreciate the rich history of this gorgeous city and definitely arrange for a guided visit through one of the many magnificent mansions South of Broad. There are also fascinating tours of preserved working southern plantations available on the outskirts of the city. The narrated boat ride to Fort Sumter where the Civil War began or a tour of the USS Yorktown are highlights for history buffs. A walk along the Battery where the Ashley and the Cooper Rivers meet will provide spectacular water views along with glimpses of some of the most beautiful historic homes in the south. A scenic two hour drive from Hilton Head, Charleston could be a day trip or an overnight stop while vacationing on Hilton Head and definitely worth your time.
